Whatever you think about the ANC and their (in) ability to run a country, the final percentage is going to be very important for the future of the party.

By late Thursday afternoon in South Africa, the ANC had captured about 57 percent of the vote.

He has promised to improve service delivery, create jobs and fight corruption. President Ramaphosa is not only a refreshing change from the Zuma era but is a business savvy leader who understands the inner workings of the economy. There is now a commission looking into high-level corruption under the Zuma administration.

The men who would be president:Why has the ANC lost support? 19 more parties than 2004.

Inclement weather was reported through the southern parts of the country including parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State where cold conditions and rain were reported.

Construction worker Thabo Makhene, 32, in the commercial hub of Johannesburg, told Reuters: "I'm a member of the ANC but I didn't vote for them this time".

"The ANC will be elected with a record low of 27 per cent of the eligible population backing them, compared with 47 per cent in 1999".

This happened because the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a breakaway from the ANC which espouses a more militant brand of African nationalism, agreed to support the country's second biggest party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), even though they differ on just about everything.

Our reporter on the ground, Daniel Mumbere, gave a rundown of the process of special voting on The Morning Call.

'The poor are getting poorer' The ANC has been confronted by deepening public anger over its failure to tackle poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa. The centre-right DA party looks likely to exceed expectations with 25%, according to the current results. The EFF is much closer to the ANC (hence majority blacks) in terms of policy and should easily overtake the DA whose origins and membership is largely white and elitist.

The African National Congress (ANC) said that opposition parties shouldn't celebrate just yet after the party officially dipped below the 50% mark in Gauteng. He denies any wrongdoing.

The African National Congress (ANC), in power since 1994, surged into the lead with almost 57 percent after more than half the voting districts were officially tallied following Wednesday's vote. The DA is hoping to shed its image as a white, middle-class party.

A year ago the DA became embroiled in a bitter dispute with one of its most prominent politicians, former Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille.

The EFF is followed by the Freedom Front Plus, with 3.2% of the vote and the IFP with 1.4%.

Based on those results, analysts predicted the ANC was set for a vote share of between 55 and 59 percent.

These are, so far, the leading three parties in the race for the national government. What is clear is that, the worse the ANC does, the better the Zuma group's chances are of removing Ramaphosa at the national conference in 2022.

The Economic Freedom Fighters, founded six years ago by former ANC youth leader Julius Malema, was in third place with nearly 10 percent. His political rhetoric appeals to mainly younger black voters who are disillusioned with 25 years of ANC rule.
