Donald Trump Jr., the son of U.S. President Donald Trump, has been loading by the intelligence Committee of the US Senate, under threat of punishment, to answer further questions in connection with the Russian Federation investigation.
It's the first known subpoena of a member of President Donald Trump's immediate family, and a new sign that the Senate panel is continuing with its own Russian Federation investigation even after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on the same subject.
Why it matters: It's the first congressional subpoena - that we know about - of one of President Trump's children.
He said the committee reserves the right to call witnesses back if they see inconsistencies in testimony.
Trump and his administration are battling with opposition Democratic lawmakers in the House of Representatives for testimony and documents on an array of fronts, but the Senate panel's Wednesday subpoena of Trump Jr. was a surprise.
During an appearance before the Judiciary Committee Trump Jr was asked about the extent of his involvement in a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
An unnamed source close to Trump Jr. said on Wednesday that he wasn't sure why Republicans were doing this. The Senate intelligence committee has interviewed numerous same witnesses the Mueller investigative team spoke with. The committee's chairman is North Carolina Republican Sen.
"The fact that they're subpoenaing Trump Jr is a strong signal that he declined a request to appear before the committee again", news website Axios wrote. "Senate Intell Committee effectively being run by minority". During the 2016 presidential campaign, Cohen testified, he briefed Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump about the proposed Trump Tower Moscow project about 10 times. Grand Rapids was the final city Trump visited during his 2016 campaign. Trump Jr. and his brother Eric are overseeing the president's Trump Organization business empire while Trump is in office.
But concerns about Trump Jr.'s statements are potentially more problematic for the president. Issued by a committee where GOP members hold the majority, it also comes as a relative surprise.
Mueller declined to say one way or the other whether Trump should have been charged, citing long-standing Justice Department guidance that sitting presidents can not be indicted. In January, he doubled down on having hardly anything to do with the project, telling Fox News' Laura Ingraham that it was his father's former disgraced personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen who was handling the negations.
Vice President Mike Pence said on Tuesday the Trump administration would soon sanction the 25 remaining members of the court. The USA and over 50 other countries now recognise Guaido as the legitimate interim President of the Latin American nation.
