Mogherini: Events in Venezuela Show Lack of Political Horizon to End Crisis

  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is demanding that Russia get out of Venezuela

In an interview with the BBC, self-proclaimed Venezuelan leader Juan Guaido stated that it is "responsible to evaluate" the possibility of worldwide intervention when he was asked if he would welcome USA military intervention.

Guaido, the president of the country's national assembly, invoked Venezuela's constitution in January to declare himself interim president of the country, arguing that Maduro's 2018 re-election was illegitimate.

Guaido called on the people of Venezuela, and the army to take to the streets in order to complete the process of overthrowing Venezuela's legitimate president.

Leader of Venezuela's Constituent Assembly Diosdado Cabello said earlier that Caracas would remove immunity from the lawmakers who took part in the recent coup attempt in the country.

The administration also continues to work on other responses to increase financial pressure on Maduro, including "secondary sanctions" on companies from other countries that do business with Venezuela, and additional shipping sanctions for oil, the official said. Removing Cristopher from the list will mean he can access any blocked assets and property he has in the United States and do business with U.S. individuals, companies and banks.

The foreign minister's comments come shortly after Juan Guaido, Venezuela's self-proclaimed interim president, told the BBC that he "will evaluate all options if necessary" when asked if he would welcome United States military intervention.

"If it doesn't, the United States will hold all 25 of its magistrates accountable", he said.

Mr Pence also said that a navy hospital ship, the USNS Comfort, would return to the area in June for a five-month mission to help neighbouring countries that are caring for some of the millions of Venezuelans who have fled their country.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the coup bid, saying "those who attempt to appoint a postmodern colonial governor to Venezuela, where the people are sovereign and where the president comes through elections, should know only democratic elections determined the way to govern the country".

Pence said in a speech on Tuesday that the USA was also considering sanctions on members of the Venezuelan Supreme Court. It is now preparing sanctions for the 25 remaining members of the court, a senior USA administration official said on Monday.

Mr Pence's remarks came as Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered the prosecution of seven MPs over their alleged participation in a failed military uprising led by Mr Guaidó.

The court also would be responsible for signing off on any warrant for an arrest of Guaido - a step that U.S. officials have warned would result in severe consequences.

Venezuela's Supreme Court, which is closely allied with President Nicolas Maduro, said on Tuesday that it was launching a preliminary investigation into seven top opposition politicians.
