Maximum Security's owner to appeal Kentucky Derby disqualification

  • Luis Saez riding Maximum Security takes the lead heading into the first turn during the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Maximum Security crossed the finish line first but after was disqualified because of a foul on the track

West said he did see Maximum Security, who led from almost start to finish, move over several lanes but felt such contact was inevitable given the number of horses allowed to race in the Kentucky Derby, which usually features 20 horses but this year had 19 year after a late scratch.

The Derby is the first leg of the famous Triple Crown, which moves on to the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore on May 18 before the final leg at Belmont Park, on Long Island on June 8.

An appeal filed Monday morning was denied later in the day by the KHRC, which stated in a letter to West's attorney that the stewards' decision is not subject to appeal. "And I think they deserve an opportunity to really know what was going on".

Country House went off 65-1 and won the race after Maximum Security, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified for interfering with other horses during the race. Doyle added, however, that Maximum Security did violate the rules and that the stewards, the "referees" of horse racing, made the right decision.

The objection was upheld following an extensive 22-minute review and Country House was declared the victor after entering the race as a 65-1 longshot and taking home the race's $1.86 million prize.

'I think there's no Triple Crown on the line for us, ' West said.

You've probably heard by now that this year's Kentucky Derby was a mess of horse drama.

But at least one person found himself upset for the stupidest reason imaginable, and that person was Donald Trump, who took to Twitter to accuse the Kentucky Derby of caving to PC culture.

Chief steward Barbara Borden said in a news conference she and two other stewards interviewed riders and studied video replays during a 22-minute review after the finish.

"Well it shows that the sport is well governed by the racing officials, that they made a very tough decision and in one of the largest and the biggest race in the United States", he said.

West, 73, said that since race stewards didn't notice the infraction during the race, and were only alerted to it by jockeys, then it deserved further inquiry.

And the best story on the track may not materialize: a Maximum Security-Country House rematch. The decision made Country House, the second-place finisher, the victor of the historic race.

The only other Derby disqualification was in 1968, and long after the race.

The Jason Servis-trained colt crossed the line first in a soggy race Saturday, but was adjudged to have illegally impeded other horses during a feisty encounter.

West also told NBC that he does not envision Maximum Security running the Preakness on May 18.

West said that he "obviously saw the horse move out" but said such things happen in a race with such a big field, calling Churchill Downs "a greedy organization" for allowing such an unwieldy number.
