With the side's defence in tatters, it is only logical that they have been on the lookout for a new central defender but Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt won't be the one joining them.

Barca's original offer to De Ligt included a five-year contract which would see him earn more in each year of the deal.

"But I saw the Barcelona game yesterday [a 4-0 defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League] and they need something at the back desperately because there are one or two players a little bit over the hill".

"Matthijs will become the best defender in the world", is what the source told them.

The interest in the Netherlands worldwide - Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester United have all been linked - and Ajax's run in the Champions League have led Raiola to suggest that the previous pact is no longer suitable.

De Ligt even turned them down before United had failed to secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification. They are not the attractive proposition they once were. "He's one of the most in demand stars on the planet".

Since completing a deal for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong in January, the Blaugrana have focused all their attention on De Ligt.

That's a shame for Man United.

But it appears they will have to look elsewhere this summer.

Trippier probably shouldn't be marking De Ligt, it's a David vs Goliath mismatch in terms of physicality, but the right-back still took a lot of stick from Tottenham fans after the goal. Have your say by leaving a comment below.
