Runner-up Country House (65-1) was awarded the race to become the second biggest priced victor of the first leg of the American Triple Crown. An objection was filed accusing Maximum Security of interfering with other horses, and race officials reversed the decision, giving Country House the victory.

This was the first time in Kentucky Derby history the outcome of a race had been changed.

Code of Honor returned $15.20 and $9.80 for second while Tacitus paid $5.60 for third.

"I know the stewards had a very, very hard decision", Mott said.

"I never doubted it".

Maximum Security was dropped to 17th of 19 horses, placed behind all the horses it was determined that he bothered. Game Winner took its place for favorite with 5/1 odds, while Improbable and Roadster were close behind at 6/1, according to Forbes. "Then when I saw the pictures last night", McGaughey said, "I have to agree the stewards made the right call".

"The victor kind of pushed me sideways", Prat said.

Being a Kentucky Derby victor - or better yet a Triple Crown victor - increases the value of a stallion's price as a sire at stud.

Maximum Security, the No. 7 horse in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, won the Run for the Roses ... until he didn't. Country House, a 65-1 long shot, was awarded the victory. Even if it was accepted that the interference was enough to impact the result, Maximum Security should have been demoted to second. It is the first win in the race for Mott and Prat, and the son of Preakness Stakes victor Lookin At Lucky will now attempt to emulate his sire by winning the second leg of the US Triple Crown.

The result ended a six-year streak of favorites winning the race.

Maximum Security, ridden by Luis Saez, finished first Saturday in the 145th Kentucky Derby at Louisville's Churchill Downs. Not only are injuries common for jockeys, they also must do whatever is necessary to keep their own weight down, typically at around 100 pounds, so that their horses can be as fast as possible. Said McGaughey, "We're gon' be in the news the next couple of weeks".
