Verizon Moto Z3 gets Android 9 Pie update, 5G Moto Mod support

05 April, 2019, 06:56 | Author: Rodolfo Hawkins

Verizon says the first three months of 5G coverage will be offered for free. Sure, AT&T "technically" launched its 5G mobile network back in late 2018, but access to the network is extremely limited and only made possible with Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspots.

With the U.S., South Korea, and China in a race to get their 5G networks up and running, it seems that Verizon wanted to beat SK Telecom to the punch. Why?

Verizon tried to take an early lead in the 5G era with its non-standard 5G home internet service a year ago, but today is the big day for Verizon's real 5G network.

In Chicago, Verizon said its 5G coverage is concentrated around the West Loop and the South Loop, typically around tourist attractions like the Willis Tower, Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park. For starters, the only now compatible phone is a Moto Z3 with the accompanying 5G Moto Mod. Although Verizon's preorder pricing for the 5G Moto Mod was at a spectacularly low $50, you'll now have to pay $199.99 for that privilege ($349 MSRP). Currently, only the moto z3 combined with the new 5G moto mod will support the network. Verizon says that the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod are available today for in-store pickup, or you can choose next-day or two-day shipping options to have it on your doorstep before the end of the week. Verizon said you're the "first in the world" to get a commercial 5G network that works with a 5G smartphone. Then, you'll have to tack on another $10/month for those glorious 5G speeds (albeit without data caps).

On a related note, what in the hell is that "5G UWB" logo?

Verizon's 5G network is live in Chicago and Minneapolis. Verizon will be the first carrier to offer Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 5G smartphone later this spring, but we're still waiting for a price and release date.

With plenty of holdings in the 28GHz and 39GHz millimeter wave spectrum, expect to see Verizon doing plenty of small 5G UWB rollouts throughout the rest of the year. The carrier is charging $10 a month for unlimited 5G data on top of its regular unlimited plans. Service is now limited to 5G hotspots, though, until AT&T starts selling 5G-capable phones.
