US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who oversaw President Donald Trump's bitterly contested immigration policies during her tumultuous 16-month tenure, has resigned amid a surge in the number of migrants at the border with Mexico.

A senior Trump administration official said the president's national security adviser, John Bolton, after a blowup with Nielsen late a year ago, also recommended to Trump that she should go.

This was a move Conway was quick to bash the president for, as he pointed out Trump's ineffective efforts to retain cabinet members at key departments and noted that the president reversed immediately implementing Nielsen's resignation because it was probably against the law.

According to news website, "Trump has wanted Nielsen gone for months because he believes she's "weak" on immigration", including on the issues of the construction of the wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and deportation of illegal immigrants. In this telling, Trump's administration drifts helplessly from disaster to disaster, with a cast of officials who all have one foot on a banana peel and another out the door.

He and Kirstjen Nielsen parted ways after urgent talks in the White House that followed a two-day visit to California, during which they viewed parts of the renovated border wall.

"It is deeply alarming that the Trump Administration official who put children in cages is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House's liking", she said.

Many prominent Democrats have weighed in on Nielsen's departure, with 2020 candidates and senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris issuing similar sentiments on Twitter, highlighting Nielsen's controversial policies.

Nielsen's resignation was preceded on Thursday night by the abrupt withdrawal of the nomination of acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement director Ron Vitiello to formally lead the agency, with Trump telling reporters Friday morning that he wanted to go in a "tougher direction".

Arrests along the southern border have increased sharply over the past few months. More than half were families with children.

Nielsen dutifully pushed Trump's immigration policies, including funding for his border wall, and defended the administration's practice of separating children from parents. But she was also instrumental in ending the policy.

Neilsen, whose background is in cybersecurity, also angered Trump by adopting a hard line on the "Russia rigged the election" narrative - which has lost considerable steam in the aftermath of the report of US special counsel Robert Mueller being released.

Uhhh... WTF?! Blocking immigrants from claiming ASYLUM? Right now there is space for about 3,000 families, and facilities are at capacity. She was tasked with helping states secure elections following Russian interference during the 2018 election. A protege of Kelly's, he brought her to the White House after Trump named him chief of staff.
