Khashoggi children 'given houses, money by Saudi'

The children of Jamal Khashoggi have received property worth millions of dollars as a one-time compensation and huge monthly allowances for the killing of the Saudi journalist, a source has said.

The family could soon receive additional payments in the form of so-called "blood money" in connection with a trial for Khashoggi's killing that is unfolding in Saudi Arabia. His body has not been found.

Negotiations over further payments are expected to take place following the trials of Khashoggi's accused killers, according to the officials and others who spoke to the paper on the condition of anonymity.

The Post's report on Monday quoted a former Saudi official saying King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud approved the "delivery of homes and monthly payments of $10,000 or more to each sibling" in 2018 as an acknowledgement that "a big injustice has been done" and a bid "to make a wrong, right".

Khashoggi's two sons and two daughters have largely stayed silent since his death and avoided attacks on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is accused of ordering the killing.

The Washington Post, where Khashoggi worked as a columnist before he was killed, first reported the payments to his children.

King Salman reportedly approved the compensation to the Khashoggi siblings late a year ago in what a former official described as an attempt "to make a wrong right" in the aftermath of "a big injustice", according to the Post.

But even under those circumstances, the Khashoggi family abstained from cacophonous claims against Saudi Arabia and its rulers.

Of course, the Saudis tried their best to hide their tracks, repeatedly lying about Khashoggi's whereabouts, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman front and centre of the cover-up.

Three of Khashoggi's children live in the USA and are expected to sell their properties, which are in Jeddah.

Miller's report cited current and former officials from Saudi Arabia, all speaking anonymously.

Looking ahead, the Saudi leadership would like nothing more than to bury the Khashoggi saga and move forward in working closely with the USA when it comes to the kingdom's economic transformation as well as Riyadh's and Washington's shared objectives in the region, particularly with respect to countering Iranian influence. The essay did not address who killed Khashoggi. While his daughters have been outspoken about their father, his sons have remained focused on receiving the maximum financial compensation from the crown prince.

"On a bipartisan basis, it voted to withhold support for Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen, investigated the US response to the murder and moved to restrict the transfer of nuclear technology to the Saudi government", the report added. "I want the da Vinci", he said, referring to a painting by the Renaissance master that the crown prince paid $450 million for in 2017.
