  • Measles cases investigated by L.A. County public health officials

The surge in numbers, up from 626 reported on Monday, has been driven by the outbreak in New York City, which recorded 61 new cases today.

Confirmed cases of measles have been reported in 11 states so far this year.

Los Angeles health officials warned this week that students and staff at UCLA and Cal State L.A. may be at risk of catching measles, an announcement that has raised questions about universities' susceptibility to disease outbreaks.

The resurgence, which public health officials blamed in part on the spread of misinformation about the safety of vaccines, has been concentrated mainly in Washington state and NY with outbreaks that began late previous year.

For instance, the outbreak in NY, which was declared a public health emergency last month, began when an unvaccinated child became infected while visiting Israel, according to health officials. As Minister for Health Dwayne Seymour wrote in a statement honouring the week, "We each have an important role to play in supporting vaccination and keeping deadly diseases at bay".

Rabbi Simcha Scholar, the head of Chai Lifeline, a nonprofit that provides support to Orthodox Jewish families with children who have cancer and other severe health conditions, said it's been a trying time for parents he works with, for whom a measles exposure could mean their child dies.

"Before 1989 it was really common practice just to receive one vaccine before age 13", said Dr. Lim. Although considered an easily preventable disease, experts say they're preparing for measles outbreaks to become "the new normal" thanks to widespread misinformation about vaccines. New York City issued a mandate on April 9 requiring residents in parts of Brooklyn to get vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella or face a $1,000 fine.

In Oregon, officials reported an additional four cases in Multnomah County, which includes Portland. Butte County has almost 5 cases per 100,000 residents, while Shasta and Calaveras counties have about 2 cases per 100,000, according to 2017 population counts.

In Washington state, 74 people contracted the infection in that outbreak, including 63 who were unvaccinated.

"They told us that if you've had the vaccination shot, you know, you don't have to worry too much and the virus itself will die within two hours", MAPCO employee Timothy Sims said. Symptoms generally begin a week or two after someone is exposed to the disease.

The CDC recommends the vaccine for every American over 1 year old. The other 10% were vaccinated with either one or two doses. This weekend, the Public Health Department is making it even easier by hosting a clinic to make sure our children's vaccinations are up to date.

To get the vaccine, Hamilton says the best way is to go to your primary doctor.

It can be spread through a simple cough or sneeze.
