  • US nears record number of measles cases

Since 2000, the annual number of cases has ranged from a low of 37 in 2004 to a high of 667 in 2014, with 2019 on pace to top that number. Conversely, measles is known to be highly contagious and infects ninety percent of unvaccinated individuals who come in contact with the disease.

The agency noted that only about one in 10 actual measles cases are reported, meaning the early trends for 2019 likely underestimate the severity of the outbreaks.

Vaccination protects you from illness, and also protects the community around you, especially those who are unable to be vaccinated, such as babies and people with weakened immune systems. Although only 5 states are now experiencing outbreaks, 22 states have reported confirmed cases of measles in 2019.

If parents have concerns about these side effects, we recommend that they speak with their health care providers about the benefits and risks of vaccines, along with the potential consequences of not vaccinating against diseases. "The best way to protect yourself and to prevent the spread of measles is to get the measles immunization, with two doses of measles immunization being about 97% effective at preventing measles".

The department is investigating a number of reports of measles in county residents (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena as any cases identified in those cities are reported by their local health departments). Complications can result in pneumonia, brain swelling, and death, and 1-2 children out of every 1000 that contract the disease die from complications.

Measles, a disease that can be prevented via two doses of a vaccation, has seen a resurgence around the world, including in nations where vaccination levels are high.

Check your immunity to measles Measles is a very infectious viral illness that spreads easily from person to person. The second dose is given when the child is between 4 and 6 years old. "However, we can turn the tide by people getting vaccinated". "After just one dose of MMR vaccine about 95% of people will be protected from measles, and 99% of people who have had both MMR doses will be protected from measles". "We will continue to provide these vaccines and we are committed to ensure that they are available to protect our children and our population", Belmar-George said.

Common symptoms associated with measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash which usually appears 10 to 21 days after exposure.

"Non-immune adults, or those without documentation of vaccination as children, who are going to be in a setting that poses a high risk for measles transmission, such as students at post-high school education institutions, healthcare personnel and global travelers, will need two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days", Dr. Stockwell said.
