Blizzard conditions expected by Wednesday afternoon: Pinpoint Weather Alert Day

  • Potential Winter Storm For SE Wyoming Wednesday

There's a storm on the way that's going to remind Midwesterners that winter isn't over until it's over.

Blizzard warnings have been issued for the Rockies and Plains areas, where a second bomb cyclone is predicted. It's rare enough to have one form inland, much less two. It seems appropriate for a storm that strong to have bomb in its name, but the word actually refers to a meteorological phenomenon and not the cyclone's explosive intensity. Either way, this storm is forecast to unleash a variety of wild weather this week.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem on Wednesday closed state government offices in 52 counties under a blizzard warning, according to a statement from her office.

However, our confidence is increasing for a swath of heavy snow across parts of the High Plains, northern Plains and upper Midwest from Wednesday through Friday, including parts of Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, far northern Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and northern MI.

Arctic air will dive south, bringing frigid temperatures and possible blizzard conditions for portions of the Rockies, Plains and even Great Lakes.

Meteorologists say the particulars of this incoming storm are hard to predict, but that initial melting could be followed by a rapid accumulation rate of snow and high winds that will lead to blowing snow.

Thursday the storm will reach the Midwest, bringing with it the heavy snow.

Nothing says spring like hurricane-force winds, snow and blizzards.

While an April snowstorm seems like a punch in the gut, April snowstorms do happen. A year ago about this time, a major winter system dumped 33 inches of snow in northeastern Wisconsin.

The snow is not the only hazard from the storm. Wednesday afternoon through Friday will be about 40 to 50 degrees colder than the temperatures Tuesday afternoon.

On Thursday the threat will shift farther east into Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Schultz compared the conditions expected Thursday with those during the October 2018 storm that battered the Lakewalk, damaged the seawall in Canal Park and caused an estimated $18.4 million in damage. Renewed major flooding, especially near rivers, will likely be the story in other spots in the Plains and Midwest next week. The Red River is now flooding in some areas, and the extra precipitation likely will exacerbate that.

(ABC News) Snowfall totals will be heaviest throughout South Dakota, northern Nebraska and western Minnesota. From Denver north (Thornton, Longmont, Fort Collins) we think we may end up seeing more rain than snow.

The World-Herald noted, however, that the storm forecast to hit this week could be "just shy" of the definition of a bomb cyclone.

Just when you thought spring was here to stay, winter pulled you back in Monday, bringing as much as a foot of snow to parts of Maine.
