  • Ben Wallace Belongs in the Hall of Fame

Here's a look at the new hall of fame members.

Sidney Moncrief, who played 10 of his 11 years with the Bucks, is one the high-profile inductees in the class. He was an All-Star in seven consecutive seasons for Seattle, and in his second year after being taken in the first round of the 1977 NBA Draft by Seattle, he helped lead the franchise to its one and only NBA championship. He received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2012-13 season and was selected into Top 10 Coaches in NBA History in 1996. "The Class of 2019 is brimming with those who have had a significant historical impact on the game we love".

Bobby Jones, four-time NBA All-Star, eight-time NBA All-Defensive First Team, won the 1983 NBA Championship with the Philadelphia 76ers as the first NBA Sixth Man of the Year in history.

After putting in players who could pour in the points but were not so hot on the defensive end (George Gervin?), the Naismith voters might have felt it was time to reward a player noted for defense (although four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace was bypassed), even though Jones was certainly a contributor on the offensive end.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's 2019 induction ceremony will be held September 6 in Springfield, Mass. Al Attles was directly elected from the Contributor Committee, Charles "Chuck" Cooper from the Early African American Pioneers Committee, Vlade Divac from the International Committee, Carl Braun from the Veterans Committee and the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens of 1948-1982 from the newly instated Women's Veterans Committee.

To be elected, North American and Women's Committee finalists must receive 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jones, a forward, was NBA All-Defensive first team eight times with the Philadelphia 76ers and twice was ABA All-Defensive first team.

Usually, the closer to the end of a player's career the better their chances are to make the Hall of Fame, as their play is still fresh in people's minds.

Westphal, 68, was a five-time NBA All-Star and four-time All-NBA player as a guard, mostly with the Phoenix Suns. A two-time All-American at Louisiana Tech, Weatherspoon was also a six-time Italian League All-Star and two-time champion in the Russian League before the WNBA was launched. He was the 1982-1983 NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award victor while posting 9.0 points per game and 4.6 rebounds.

Westphal won an National Basketball Association title with the 1973-74 Celtics, and he helped lead the Phoenix Suns to a Western Conference title in the 1975-76 season. The five-time All-Star died in 2010 at age 82.

After he was officially selected, Jones told NBATV what he remembered about that 1983 Sixers team.
