Attorney general defends handling of Mueller’s Russian Federation report

  • ‘Conclusion – no collusion’: Trump says he hasn’t read Mueller Report, calls it ‘waste of time’

Late last month, Barr released a four-page summary of the report saying that Mueller had concluded that Trump and his campaign had not colluded with Russian Federation.

The key finding, Trump pointed out, was no evidence of collusion or obstruction and he labelled the entire enterprise as a "total waste of time." .

Trump's tweet simultaneously criticized members of Mueller's team for becoming mainstream media news sources, and accuses those same media outlets of not having the sources that Trump just got done denouncing. The attorney general and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, looked at the obstruction evidence and determined it did not rise to the level of a crime, Barr wrote.

Attorney General William Barr is reviewing the almost 400-page report and says he plans to release it in the coming days after redacting confidential information, such as secret grand jury testimony or foreign intelligence that was included in the report.

"Given the extraordinary public interest in the matter, the Attorney General chose to release the report's bottom-line findings and his conclusions immediately - without attempting to summarize the report - with the understanding that the report itself would be released after the redaction process", the Justice Department statement said.

Trump is also likely concerned about reports that surfaced last week, indicating that some members of Mueller's core team are unhappy with the way their conclusions, particularly on the subject of the president's "obstruction", were characterized in a four-page letter issued by Attorney General Robert Barr.

US President Donald Trump was a vocal critic of the investigation into his campaign.

Democrats on Capitol Hill have stated that they will take Barr to court if their subpoena is again ignored. "We are very hopeful the attorney general will do the right thing here and make everything public that can lawfully be made public".

So far, Barr has held firm to his stance that he will release this month more of the Mueller report, but stripped of evidence and testimony given to Mueller's grand jury.

Barr did not meet a demand by Democrats in the US House of Representatives to provide the unredacted report to lawmakers by April 2.

Speaking with host Margaret Brennan, the former New York City mayor was pressed about Trump interfering in the report by claiming "executive privilege".

On Friday, the Justice Department, commenting on a fresh ruling in a case on grand jury secrecy, signalled its stance against that.

"When you're starting your morning attack of institutions, I think you've gotta pick a lane", Rogers said.

Many Democrats and legal observers see Barr as an improper actor in the handling of the Mueller report.
