An Acting Government For The Trump Administration

  • US President Donald Trump thanked Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen for her service on Twitter

Senate Chuck Grassley, a Republican Senator from Iowa who previously served as Judiciary Committee Chairman, said in an interview with USA media Monday that he was "very concerned" over the possible ousting of more DHS senior officials, after Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and Director of the Secret Service Randolph Alles exited.

Some fear that may include a return of the family separations that Trump was forced to back away from previous year, as well as more firings.

"I share the president's goal of securing the border", Nielsen said outside her townhouse in Alexandria, Va.

Then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen standing with President Donald Trump as he holds up an executive order he signed to end family separations in the Oval Office - June 20, 2018.

MSNBC's Ari Melber ripped White House advisor Stephen Miller ("Donald Trump's Donald Trump") tonight over the harsh immigration policy he has pushed for during his tenure in the Trump administration. Both Nielsen and Alles were closely associated with former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who resigned past year after falling out of favor with Trump.

Mr. Trump and Stephen Miller, his top immigration adviser, have privately but regularly complained about Ms. Nielsen.

Nielsen's departure means a total of 15 of Trump's Cabinet-level appointees have left in the first three years of the Trump administration, according to Kathryn Dunn Tenpas, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. "I couldn't have been more disappointed" to see Vitiello's nomination pulled, he said, describing Vitiello as "a 30-year Border Patrol, deputy chief and you're saying, 'Well, you're not really tough enough?' I find that kind of wonderful". White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said James Murray, a career Secret Service agent, will take over the Secret Service next month.

Over the weekend, the administration withdrew the nomination of Ron Vitiello to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Well, I don't want to disparage Kirstjen Nielsen at all, but I would say in respect to Kevin, nobody is more frustrated than Kevin about the fact that these policy changes haven't been made", the official told reporters Tuesday.

While Trump disputed any departmental upheaval, his outside allies launched a public campaign urging him to nominate former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to replace Nielsen.

But despite allegedly refusing the president's aggressive requests, Nielsen still oversaw the Trump administration's practice of separating migrant children from their families. Tell them we don't have the capacity, he said. Presumably, President Trump was relying upon the FVRA in naming McAleenan as acting secretary.

Late Monday, a federal judge in San Francisco issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration policy forcing asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico. Prominent evangelicals, including evangelist Franklin Graham, Samuel Rodriguez, and the Southern Baptist Convention, denounced the short-lived effort that separated children and parents once they crossed into the US.

"I think it would be hard for him to demonstrate he's accomplished anything for the president", Grassley said.

Last Friday, the President visited Calexico, California, where he said, "We're full, our system's full, our country's full - can't come in!" During a Senate Judiciary hearing last month, he refused to say whether Customs had a responsibility to keep migrant children in their custody safe.

"I don't envy anybody in that position because these are policies that are White House policies, not DHS", said Kerlikowske, who promoted McAleenan to be his top deputy.
