Measles on the rise globally

The number of measles cases between January and February 2019 was at 13,470, Health spokesperson Undersecretary Eric Domingo told radio DZMM.

Last week, the Department expanded vaccination recommendations for providers serving the Orthodox Jewish community to include an early, extra dose of the MMR vaccine for children between the ages of 6 months to 11 months who live in Williamsburg and Borough Park. Measles, a highly-contagious virus with no cure, is easily prevented by vaccines that most people receive during childhood.

"There is no one way to talk about vaccine safety with parents", Grosso said.

The United Nations agency notes that, for 2018, 98 countries reported more measles than the previous year, a sign of eroding progress against the highly preventable but potentially fatal and highly communicable disease.

The Oregon Health Authority said that it is working with Marion and Multnomah counties to notify people who may have been exposed.

Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), ranking member of the full Energy & Commerce Committee, noted that one in four people diagnosed with measles will end up being hospitalized. "We must do more to accurately inform every parent, to help us safely vaccinate every child".

Many of this year's cases are part of measles outbreaks in Washington, New York, Texas, and IL (today, the state's health officials warned Chicago Midway International Airport travelers that they may have been exposed to the disease).

Even though it has been declared eliminated in America, "measles continues to circulate globally, which means unvaccinated USA travelers can be exposed to measles and bring it back home with them", Messonnier said at the hearing.

Serious complications can result from measles including ear infections and pneumonia (one in 10), brain inflammation and brain damage (one in 1000) or even death (one in 3000).

The CDC says worldwide travelers who can not show that they were vaccinated or are otherwise protected against mumps, should get vaccinated before leaving the USA.

Brazil had the third most cases of measles in 2018 with 10,262.

Montana: Three cases of mumps are confirmed in children attending Bozeman public schools, and health officials are investigating other possible cases.

Deaths from measles in the USA are rare. "And try not to contaminate people on the way to the doctors or the hospital-wear a mask try to avoid public places".

UNICEF said it has provided ongoing support to accelerate routine immunization across Ukraine to address vaccine hesitancy in the crisis that has claimed 30 lives since 2017. "They are best protected by vaccinating those around them who can be". A suggestion that immunization might be tied to severe consequences like autism was debunked years ago, after findings supporting that link were proved fraudulent. This is despite there being a vaccine for measles readily available in most countries, which is cheap and effective. How could a completely preventable disease return in just several years?
