Facebook's outage helps Telegram gain 30 lakh new users

  • Facebook into second day of global outage

Media reports earlier said millions of users were affected, and thousands took to Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday to complain under the hashtag #facebookdown. It was probably the last thing Facebook needed as it stumbles from problem to problem, including outrage over its use of customers' private data.

Users cited snags not only with Facebook, but also its photo-sharing site Instagram, the messaging tools Messenger and WhatsApp and Oculus virtual reality devices.

While a minor inconvenience for most users, the disruption could cause brands and retailers to lose valuable business, as Facebook and Instagram comprise an ever-greater share of marketing budgets.

This outage did not impact WhatsApp message in the United States, but The Verge reported that users in Paraguay, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, and more noted that they experienced issues with sending messages.

"Yesterday, we made a server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues", said a Facebook spokesperson.

The company, in a brusque tweet, said: "Yesterday, as a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services".

In some cases, the apps could be accessed but would not load posts or handle messages.

While the outage continued, The New York Times reported that USA prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network´s practice of sharing users´ data with companies without letting them know.

A spokesman for the social network said the company was cooperating with investigators in multiple federal probes. Regions affected include the NY area, parts of California and the Seattle region, according to Downdetector. Last year, Telegram stated that it had crossed the 200 million monthly active users mark despite restrictions in markets such as Russia, China, and Iran.

While Facebook has restored majority of services, there are users around the world that are still experiencing problems. Regulators, and now prosecutors, appear intent on determining whether this was done in ways that let users know what was happening and protected privacy.
