Users across the globe experienced problems sending messages on Facebook's messaging apps Messenger and Whatsapp.
The last time Facebook had a disruption of this magnitude was in 2008, when the site had 150 million users - compared with around 2.3 billion monthly users today.
Some users of Facebook and other platforms owned by the tech giant, including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, experienced problems accessing the services.
Via its Twitter account, Facebook said the outage was not due to a "distributed denial of service" or DDoS attack, a type of attack that hackers use to interrupt service to a site. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible".
Social media users in parts of United States, Japan and some parts Europe were affected by the outage, according to DownDetector's live outage map.
"Internet users made their way to Twitter to complain about the hours-long service disruption with hashtags such as "#FacebookDown", "#InstagramDown" and "#Whatsapp".
"Ya'll, I haven't gotten my daily dosage of dank memes and I think that's why I'm cranky".
According to the BBC, this is worst outage in Facebook's history.
"I figured this could happen eventually but it's extremely crippling to be part of this monopoly".
In a series of tweets, Facebook confirmed the outage, and said it wasn't being targeted in a DDoS attack, as some people had speculated without evidence. While the sites/apps are working fine for some, others are unable to access or login to Facebook and Instagram. The three popular social media platforms are now experiencing outages at the moment making it hard to view your latest feed and posting new updates. Social media users panicked and tweeted that the website may have faced a cyber attack on its servers.
