Duke star Zion Williamson named ACC Player of the Year

  • Head coach Tony Bennett of the Virginia Cavaliers

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski made the announcement late Saturday, with Zion Williamson expected back after a five-game absence due to a knee injury suffered in the team's first meeting against North Carolina back on February 20.

The regular season is over, and the ACC announced its end-of-the-year awards today.

The start of conference tournament championship week is now at hand with the big question this week the same as last week: When will Zion Williamson, favorite for national Player of the Year, return for Duke? The Bulls play at noon Thursday against the victor of tonight's Miami-Akron game.

Bennett was the league's Coach of the Year last year as well.

Williamson is heralded as the consensus likely No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2019 NBA Draft, having averaged 21.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.8 blocks in just 28.2 minutes per game this season.

Including the UNC game, Duke has gone 3-3 in the six games without Williamson, who hasn't played since.

The full breakdown of the ACC all-conference teams and voting can be found here. Joining Williamson on the All-ACC first team are fellow Duke freshman R.J. Barrett, Virginia sophomore De'Andre Hunter, North Carolina senior Cameron Johnson and Virginia junior Kyle Guy.

The ACC Tournament begins tomorrow in Charlotte, and runs through Saturday night.
