  • If you drink hot tea or coffee there's a 90% chance of getting oesophageal cancer

It is less important in the United Kingdom, both because of lower rates of oesophageal cancer and because of the likely different approach to drinking hot beverages.

Experts believe that hot drinks may damage the cells of the oesophagus, making it more vulnerable to other carcinogens, although this study did not...

Allowing your tea to cool down or adding milk in it can reduce the risk of cancer. All of them were from north-eastern Iran.

During follow-up, 317 new cases of oesophageal cancer were identified. The researchers said their findings based on tea will apply to other beverages including coffee or hot chocolate.

The judgement was informed by studies which mostly looked at mate, a type of tea that is traditionally drunk at very hot temperatures, mainly in South America, Asia, and Africa.

"'It may thus be a reasonable public-health measure to extrapolate these results to all types of beverages, and to advise the public to wait for beverages to cool to under 60°C before consumption", he explains.

Three or more cups a day, sipped at 140 degrees or higher, gives you a 90 percent higher risk of developing esophageal cancer, reported researchers with the Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 13,750 new cases of esophageal cancer will be diagnosed in men and 3,900 new cases in women in the United States in 2019.

According to a new study, regularly drinking very hot tea could increase the risk of esophageal cancer. Specifically, esophageal cancer is the eighth most common cancer in the world, according to data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Georgina Hill, from Cancer Research UK, advised: 'As long you're letting your tea cool down a bit before you drink it, or adding cold milk, you're unlikely to be raising your cancer risk'.
