Democrat Beto O'Rourke Jumps Into 2020 US Presidential Race

  • The enthusiasm generated by former three-term Rep. Beto O'Rourke may seem reminiscent of another politician who had only spent a few years in Congress before running for the White House — President Barack Obama

But O'Rourke is far from a front-runner just yet - with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is considering a White House bid, leading polls.

"This moment of peril produces, perhaps, the greatest moment of promise for this country", he said in the video which was posted on the El Paso Times website. O'Rourke, who critics say has offered little details about where he stands on myriad issues, will face a test on whether he can match up with policy heavyweights like Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA. Though he previously expressed support for single-payer, Politico reported that O'Rourke abruptly stopped using the words "Medicare for All" and "single-payer" during last year's Senate race.

Building a national presidential operation, however, is a different matter.

O'Rourke, whose given name is Robert Francis, acquired his nickname while growing up in El Paso.

O'Rourke said that he plans to travel the country and "listen to those who I seek to serve, to understand from your perspective how we can best meet these challenges". This "woke whiteness" factor - the idea that progressive white men in particular might be able to say and do things that minority candidates couldn't get away with - certainly seems to be an implicit part of O'Rourke's appeal.

He added: "You can probably tell that I want to run. I do".

"There's a lot in O'Rourke's record we're wary of, most notably his comment during a Senate debate past year that it's a false choice between fossil fuels and renewable energy".

He wrote: "I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents. I've never seen so much hand movement", Trump said.

While O'Rourke's announcement was welcomed by a lot of politicians - he quickly picked up an endorsement from former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley - there was at least one politician who wasn't so sure about what to make of the former congressman: President Donald Trump. Then he added: "Is he insane or is that just how he acts?"

"CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King will speak with O'Rourke for his only national TV interview following his 2020 announcement, Friday on "CBS This Morning" with a preview airing on "CBS Evening News" Thursday night.
