U.S. officials arrive in China for trade talks as deadline looms

China's economy already has shown signs of slowing, while the trade war has shaken the confidence of United States businesses, as retaliatory tariffs have raised prices and helped choke off a key export market. Officials have said March 1 is a "real deadline" for reaching a deal.

U.S. President Donald Trump signaled Tuesday he is open to postponing a trade deadline with China if negotiators make sufficient progress on a deal.

Mid-level officials began discussions Monday in preparation for two days of talks starting Thursday involving U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. The 10 percent on 200 billion goes up to 25 percent on March 1st. Trump had said final resolution of the trade dispute would depend on the meeting with Xi "in the near future" but told reporters it had not yet been arranged.

US negotiators are now in China for a week of talks ahead of the deadline at which point the USA would ramp up to 25 percent its tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports. A round of talks at the end of January ended with some progress reported - but no deal and U.S. declarations that much more work was needed.

The last round of talks in Washington late last month resulted in China importing American soybeans as it implemented promises to buy more US goods.

These include accusations of intellectual property theft and forcing American companies to share their technology with Chinese firms.

Lower level officials had arrived earlier for what the White House has called preparatory meetings due to start on Monday.
