Tyson Told Five People of Fairfax Allegations before Going Public

  • Virginia Blackface Scandal Ensnares Top State Republican

A second woman has accused embattled Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax of sexual assault, with his office still reeling from last week's claims he'd assaulted a female professor at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Her statement ended with a call for Fairfax to resign. A two-thirds majority in the Senate is needed to remove Fairfax from office.

Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax addresses the media in response to Gov. Ralph Northam's statement on February 2. "I also shared the allegation and my account of the events with a number of leaders in Richmond because then, as now, I have nothing to hide".

"As one of seven working on a 359-page yearbook, I can not endorse or associate myself with every photo, entry, or word on each page", Norment said.

Mr Fairfax, 39, said in a statement to U.S. media: "I deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation".

It is obvious that a vicious smear and coordinated smear campaign is being orchestrated against me. "I think he's betrayed the public trust, and he should resign", Booker said in response to a reporter's question during an appearance in Iowa.

The Smith Mullin statement said the alleged attack on Watson "was premeditated and aggressive", while also saying Fairfax and Watson "were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship". We believe these allegations need to be taken very seriously, and we respect the right of women to come forward and be heard.

The yearbook includes a photo of a man in blackface standing with others in costumes and uses racial slurs to describe a student from Bangkok, Thailand.

But former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is now calling on Fairfax to resign, as well.

Watson's accusation comes after another woman, Vanessa Tyson, came forward earlier this week with her own sexual assault allegations against Fairfax.

The twin developments came at the end of a turbulent week that saw all three of Virginia's top elected officials - all Democrats - embroiled in potentially career-ending scandals.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, accompanied by his wife Pamela Northam, announces he will not resign during a news conference in Richmond, Virginia February 2, 2019.

Gov. Ralph Northam apologized last week for appearing in a racist yearbook photo that showed one person in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood.

The pressure on Northam reached a crescendo Saturday when almost the entire Virginia Democratic establishment, as well as nearly every Democratic presidential hopeful, called on him to resign. Northam may try to appoint a Democrat, while Republicans could mount a legal challenge with the goal of having Sen. Patrick Hope, said he intends to introduce articles of impeachment against Fairfax on Monday if Fairfax hasn't left by then. Fairfax has denied the allegation and, according to NBC News, attempted to disredit Tyson in a private meeting and referred to her as a "b***h". Northam originally said that he was in the photo, but he has since retracted that claim, though he admits that under other circumstances he wore blackface to dress as Michael Jackson for a dance contest. "There's corroboration at the time she told people about it. Dr. Tyson, the first accuser, she knew where it happened, when it happened, if you read through her details of what happened to her, it's searing".

After news stories emerged Sunday night covering Tyson's post, Fairfax issued a statement saying that he had a "consensual encounter" with her in 2004, after which she did not indicate that anything had made her uncomfortable.
