  • Tiger found overweight, abandoned in Houston home

An anonymous tipster who reportedly went to a Houston house to smoke marijuana found a live tiger inside.

But once they arrived, police found a caged tiger in the home's garage, according to KTRK. "They saw a tiger in this building, this vacant house that's obviously been abandoned for some time".

The tiger was taken to an animal shelter in Houston before it was transferred to an animal sanctuary which will hopefully be its "forever home", according to a tweet by a local journalist.

"Finding a forever home for a tiger is not easy", she said. "We'll get it back to BARC and figure out what tigers eat", BARC Division Manager Jarrad Mears said.

The city doesn't have the facilities or resources to take care of a tiger, which typically eats up to 11 kilograms a day. Animal rights and conservation activists say the inconsistent patchwork of laws on tiger ownership in Texas-the state does not track which counties ban tigers, and county-level enforcement is sometimes loose-has resulted in serious consequences, the Statesman reported.

A stoner who entered an abandoned home to some marijuana thought he may have already been high when he encountered a tiger inside.

The tiger was tranquillised and transported to a city animal shelter, where it was temporarily placed in a horse pen separate from other animals, Cottingham said. But it is illegal to have a tiger in Houston. "The Houston Zoo is home to two Malayan tigers, Berani and Satu, and does not have the capacity to receive additional tigers", said the statement obtained by Houston station KPRC.

"I tried to explain to people it's a lot like having a child".

That awkward moment where you see a tiger and you don't know if its real or if this is some really good weed.

"Only six percent of the USA captive tiger population resides in zoos and other facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums", said a WWF report in 2014.
