"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal, and we're going to be voting on that in the Senate, give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal", McConnell said. Rather than fall for the ploy, Democrats voted "present", except for red-state Democratic senators who voted no.

"When I say that R's have no plan for climate change, I know it's twitter and people are prone to exaggeration, so I want to be super clear: Republicans actually have no plan to address this threat to the planet. Ocasio-Cortez tried to claim over the weekend that the FAQ, sent to news outlets such as NPR and uploaded on her congressional website, is not really part of the Green New Deal's policy proposals". Republicans have mocked it a progressive pipedream that would drive the economy off a cliff and lead to a huge tax increase, calling it evidence of the creep of "socialism" in the party.

Markey's office responded with a statement chastising McConnell for threatening to call a vote on the resolution "without committee hearings, expert testimony, or a true national debate".

Ocasio-Cortez and Markey's Green New Deal resolution-which calls for a "national mobilization" to transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030-has already garnered the support of 67 House Democrats and 11 senators, including major 2020 presidential contenders like Sens. More than 80 percent of registered voters supported the concept of a Green New Deal in a December poll by Yale and George Mason universities. -Sunrise Movement " This vote forces every member of the Senate to make a choice: will you vote for a plan to guarantee every American clean air and water, a stable climate, and a good job? Five of the declared candidates for the party's presidential nomination have signed on as co-sponsors of the measure in the Senate: Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also didn't seem too impressed with the Green New Deal resolution last week.

Even without McConnell's efforts, the Green New Deal has become the latest flashpoint in the Democratic party's internal conflict between its centrists and its unapologetic left wing.

Speaking before McConnell's announcement, at least one Republican senator said yesterday he had reservations about a possible vote on the "Green New Deal".

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who may also run for president, is keeping a distance from the "Green New Deal" for now, defending his environmental record. "I see it as a jumpstart".

Trent, the spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez, predicted the Green New Deal gambit would backfire on Republicans. From a political standpoint, the more it can get talked about the better the politics looks for our side. "Or will you stand with Mitch McConnell and the fossil fuel billionaires?"
