  • Fire at the Hotel Arpit Palace in Delhi India

A fire accident in a hotel at Delhi's Karol Bagh area has consumed 17 lives.

Delhi health minister Satyendra Kumar Jain has declared the blaze at Hotel Arpit Palace as a case of negligence, saying that the hotel had flouted rules by being allowed to build six floors instead of the six constructed.

A woman and child were seen attempting to jump while another man was spotted hanging from a terrace before falling.

In the wake of the deadly incident, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has ordered the cancellation of today evening's celebrations in connection with the completion of four years of the Aam Aadmi government. Many were severely injured and have been rushed to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The cause of the fire that started on the second floor is not known yet, though it is suspected to have originated from a short circuit.

A wedding party had booked a large part of the 35-room hotel and most of the victims were sleeping when the fire broke out, news agency Reuters said. When I opened my door, I saw very dense smoke in the corridor area. Officials said almost all rooms of the 65-room hotel were occupied when the fire began at 4 am.

Guests at the hotel, popular with budget and business travellers, were unable to use corridors to escape because of wooden panelling, according to a fire officer.

Three Myanmar citizens staying at the hotel were missing, the NDTV news network reported.

Activists say builders and landlords often amend building plans to add space and ignore safety norms to save costs.

May 29, 2018: A massive blaze, which fire officials said was of "highest magnitude", broke out at a godown in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar.

Last week, a fire broke out in a hospital in Noida, forcing an emergency evacuation of scores of patients and other people.
