  • A note sent to Steven Goff by Frank Robinson when Goff was 10 years old

He was 83 years old. He later became baseball's first African-American manager.

Robinson exploded on the scene in 1956 and for the next six decades established a legacy that's second to none.

Being the sport's first black manager "was nothing compared to what Jackie did or what he went through, but it was important because I was the first and that meant the door's open", Robinson told OTL in 2016.

Robinson was also a monumental figure in Baltimore history as an activist in the civil rights movement. After signing with the Cincinnati Reds in 1953, he faced a tough road filled with racist taunts and death threats.

Robinson, who was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, completed his career with 586 home runs, which still ranks 10 in baseball history.

After a playing career that saw him become the first man to win MVP awards in both the American and National leagues, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson became the first African-American manager in MLB history.

Pence, 35, is a lifetime.280 hitter over 12 seasons with 224 home runs and 877 RBIs, but he batted just.226 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 97 games with the Giants last season.

Robinson was named baseball's first black manager in October 1974, and managed the Indians in 1975, 1976 and for part of the 1977 season.

He went on to manage the San Francisco Giants, Orioles and the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals.

Robinson, known also for his leadership and competitive fire during a Hall of Fame playing career that spanned 21 seasons, will be remembered as a pioneer by the baseball world after paving the way for every minority manager who has followed. He won the award in 1961 for the Cincinnati Reds in the National League and in 1966 for the Orioles in the American League.

Robinson and Gibson both had the ability to hold a friendly conversation with opponents and ask how they were doing, Horton says.

No one embarrassed Robinson and no one intimidated him either. The Orioles not only won the championship, but they swept the favored Los Angeles Dodgers in four games, and no player has captured the triple crown of baseball since Robinson's prodigious 1966 season. In 2005, President George W. Bush honored Robinson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. We were friends.Frank was a hard nosed baseball player who did things on the field that people said could never be done.I'm so glad I had the chance to know him all of those years. He's also in the Nationals' Ring of Honor.

The news comes a week after Murray said he didn't know if he would attend the combine.

Basketball legend Bill Russell said Robinson was a good friend.
