  • Syria intercepts Israeli missiles fired toward Damascus

"At 11:15, Israeli fighter jets fired several missiles towards the area of Damascus, and instantly, our air defences confronted the missiles and downed majority", the source told SANA.

In a statement published on Saturday, the ministry said it had dispatched letters to the secretary general of the United Nations and the head of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in connection with Friday night's unprovoked attack on Damascus.

"Only a ministry of transport warehouse at Damascus worldwide airport was hit", SANA cited the military source as saying.

Al Arabiya quoted the Syrian state news agency SANA as stating that one of the airport warehouses was hit during the attack. Reports from Syrian state media say that the attacks centered on a warehouse outside of the airport.

Russian Federation announced it had delivered the S-300 air defense system to Syria in October.

Commentators suggested the attacks have targeted a Hezbollah-linked facility in Al Kisweh. The last time the IAF hit the same area was on December 25, 2018.

On Christmas Day, a Syrian anti-aircraft missile flew into Israeli airspace and it was destroyed by Israeli air defenses.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the target of the strike were Iranian and Hezbollah related military personnel.

The Israeli warplanes flew from the Galilee Panhandle and fired several missiles on the vicinity of the capital Damascus, said an army statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed not to let Tehran - a supporter of Assad - entrench itself militarily in the war-torn country. Syrian air defense systems were immediately activated to confront the "hostile targets", and managed to intercept "most" of the missiles, the source claimed.
