In what comes as a major blow to the start of his new season, Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the season-opening ATP 250 tournament - Brisbane International with a left thigh problem in a bid to avoid an injury ahead of Australian Open.

The second-ranked Nadal had a bye in the first round and arrived in Australia after withdrawing from an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi following one match.

'I feel better than I did four days ago... "I showed I can play very well without competing for a while".

"My hope is to win the Australian Open", said Rafa.

"I will probably be 100 per cent in five days".

"I had a good off season, as I said before".

"And being honest, I feel myself playing well".

The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, starts January 14 at Melbourne Park.

"For me it's a big goal to be ready for there [Australian Open] and I'm going to fight for it", Nadal added. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Lucas Pouille all said that they will not play the one-week final stage this year, which means already three current top 10s are sidelined.

Taro Daniel, a lucky loser from qualifying, will take Nadal's place in the Brisbane International draw and will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

"The thing that I don't want to do is suffer more than what I did last year, because if you do (suffer injuries two) years in a row, that mentally kills you", he said.

Forced to withdraw from 18 of his past 19 tournaments on hard courts since 2017, the 32-year-old's only recent hit out came last month at the Mubadala Championship in Abu Dhabi where he made the semifinals.

Despite an injury-curtailed 2018 season, Nadal managed to win five titles past year, including a record-extending 11th French Open title that took his Grand Slam tally to 17.
