Kuchar was flawless on day three, posting four birdies without dropping a shot, to be the 54-hole leader at 18 under.

Matt Kuchar recovered from a poor start to cruise to his second victory of the PGA Tour season by four shots at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He then reeled off two more over the first three holes after making the turn to regain the lead.

"To shoot seven under back-to-back is unexpected, but awfully excited", Kuchar said. If I keep plugging along, I knew good things would happen.

"Andrew was tough", Kuchar said.

Kuchar ended a almost five-year drought when he won the Mayakoba Classic in November, his eighth PGA Tour win, and he said it was a good recent experience to have in the memory bank.

Chez Reavie, after consecutive 65s, and Stewart Cink (62, with nine birdies) are joint third at 10-under 130, four shots adrift.

Kuchar ended a three-year drought by winning the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico last fall. Lahiri had five birdies and three bogeys.

Kuchar maintained his lead through the back nine as Putnam began to trail by more with a bogey on the par-4 16th.

The win for Kuchar came amid Saturday-night allegations from current PGA Tour Champions player Tom Gillis, who tweeted that Kuchar paid a local fill-in caddie just $3,000 for his Mayakoba win.

Kuchar had a 54-hole score of 193 in Mexico, the lowest of his career.

Super-consistent Marc Leishman is on track for another big US PGA Tour payday but the Sony Open title appears nearly out of reach going into the final round. He holed out for eagle three times from the fairway - a sand wedge from 101 yards on No. 10 at the start of his round; a 9-iron from 149 yards on No. 16, and a gap wedge from 135 yards on No. 6.

Putnam closed with a 68 and moved into the top 50 for the first time in his career. Along with his runner-up finish in the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall, he has almost as many FedEx Cup points as past year when he finished at No. 130.

Corey Conners of Canada, who got into the field through a Monday qualifier, had a 64-64 weekend and was among four players who tied for third, though none had a serious chance of challenging what amounted to a two-player race at the top.

He posted a 14-under 126 halfway total, one stroke better than fellow American Andrew Putnam, who shot a bogey-free 65. "I look forward to the rest of the year to try and continue to see how great this year can be". "He was battling me, took the lead and it was nice to have that pressure and come through, make some birdies coming in".
