Jaguar Land Rover to cut 5000 United Kingdom jobs

  • Jaguar Land Rover is cutting thousands more jobs in a bid to save billions

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will cut 10 percent of its workforce, mostly in its home market, as Britain's biggest carmaker faces lower Chinese demand and a slump in European diesel sales.

The cuts come on top of last year's 1,500 job losses.

This comes just hours after Ford (F) announced that it would cut thousands of jobs and exit unprofitable markets in Europe.

"Unite will continue to press the auto maker for assurances over the jobs and skills of our members who have worked tirelessly over the past decade to make the company the global success story it is today".

Des Quinn, a Unite national officer, said: "Britain's auto workers have been caught in the crosshairs of the Government's botched handling of Brexit, mounting economic uncertainty and ministers' demonisation of diesel, which along with the threat of a no-deal Brexit, is damaging consumer confidence. To weather this volatile external scenario, we have launched a comprehensive turnaround plan to significantly improve our free cash flows and profitability".

Ralf Speth, JLR's chief executive, placed part of the blame for the cull on the "continuing uncertainty related to Brexit".

In the darkest day for the British automotive industry since the collapse of Rover Group 14 years ago with the loss of 6,000 jobs in Birmingham, Jaguar Land Rover said it had to take "decisive action" to secure the long-term future of the company. This latest round of cuts comes on top of the 1500 jobs Jaguar Land Rover cut past year. Sales at the SUV-heavy unit, more than double the size of the sports-car business, declined by 6.9 per cent previous year.

"Britain's auto workers have been caught in the crosshairs of the government's botched handling of Brexit, mounting economic uncertainty and ministers' demonisation of diesel, which along with the threat of a no deal Brexit, is damaging consumer confidence", Unite national officer Des Quinn said.

Business Secretary Greg Clark said the company was offering voluntary redundancy packages to its United Kingdom workforce, adding: "This is a commercial decision for the company but nevertheless it will clearly be a worrying time for Jaguar Land Rover employees and their families".

"Our results were undermined by slowing demand in China, along with continued uncertainty in Europe over diesel, Brexit and the WLTP changeover".

The auto industry has suffered a triple blow as three of the UK's biggest manufacturers announced job and production cuts. Rolls-Royce is part of what I would call the British industrial crown jewels.

But sales there have fallen almost 50% in recent months as cautious Chinese consumers have been holding back on big ticket purchases.

In China it has hired 4,000 workers since 2014. And it recently announced it would move production of the Land Rover Discovery to a new plant in Slovakia with plans to hire up to 3,000 workers.

Last November the new Range Rover Evoque was unveiled, which will be built at Halewood and was hailed as safeguarding jobs there.

The EU has denied that supporting state aid in less developed countries has led to investment being filtered away from the UK.
