Sullivan, who objects to the recent trend of naming ordinary full moons and celestial events with words like "super" and "blood", said there is, however, a legitimately interesting lunar event coming: a total eclipse. So, let's break down the hype, starting with the eclipse.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in alignment. The only reason the moon is visible is because some of the light is refracted, or bent, around the edges of the globe and toward the moon. The more particulate or pollution in the atmosphere, the redder the moon appears.

Joel 2:31, "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and bad day of the Lord come".

With the "blood moon" part of the eclipse, Brian Murphy, director of Indiana's Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium and Butler University professor said although the moon is in Earth's shadow, some sunlight still reaches the moon.

Events include a special presentation in the renovated Zeidler Dome about the geometry of the eclipse as well as a peek at the new S.P.A.C.E. Gallery featuring a real piece of the Moon.

Acts 2:20, "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come". During our days, sunlight coming in from up high is scattered.

This is when the "blood" part occurs, when the moon becomes a reddish-orange ball. That light can also change based on dust, pollutants or other particles in Earth's atmosphere. What is called the "maximum peak" of this Sunday's eclipse will appear in Chattanooga's skies at 12:12 a.m. Earth's orbit around the moon is not perfectly round, so as it circles Earth it is sometimes closer and sometimes farther away, by a distance of about 26,000 miles.

The blood moon comes overnight.

While total lunar eclipses are not especially rare, the 2019 version takes place early enough in the evening that it can be enjoyed by US stargazers of all ages, said George Lomaga, a retired astronomy professor from Suffolk County Community College. The main impediment to experiencing the relatively rare phenomenon: Weather. Many Christians believe scripture indicates a Blood Moon is a sign from God regarding the return of Christ. But National Weather Service cloud-cover forecasts show that the Northeast and much of the West might have their views obscured.

That means even the youngest astronomy buffs may get to stay up late and attend one of many watch parties that have been organised from Florida to Oregon.
