Cathay Pacific ticket mistake: First-class for $675

  • Cathay Pacific didn’t immediately say whether it would honour the bookings

Customers who purchased first and business class tickets on Cathay Pacific Airways at large discount by mistake will get to keep their bookings, the Hong Kong-based airlines said Wednesday.

The travel blog One Mile at a Time was all over the "insanely low" offer, discovering a $675 business-class deal from Da Nang to New York's JFK Airport. For comparison, that same business-class flight could cost you about $16,000 if booked on Thursday, January 3.

The South China Post found 11 people who snapped up 18 first-class and eight business-class tickets.

Last year Hong Kong Airlines said it would do the same after a similar mistake was made.

Business-class seats went for less than $1,000, and there were also cheap premium flights to Canada on offer.

A phone call went from the company to the passenger and he was told that he has booked a business class ticket from Vietnam to NY that costs Rs 11,20,240. It sold business class tickets for HK$4600 ($875) for return flights from Los Angeles to both Shanghai and Bangkok. It was an error on Cathay Pacific's part, but they are honoring the deals.

Cathay had sold tickets to the United States and other destinations from Vietnam in a promotional offer that ended December 31, according to its website.

Pricing errors could be covered under contract law in Hong Kong, leaving the sale of the tickets voidable at the behest of the seller.

In September previous year, it managed to spell its own name wrong on one of its planes.

The blunder concluded a challenging year for Cathay Pacific, which has been trying to return to profitability after posting its first ever back-to-back annual loss in March.

"Hope this will make your 2019 "special" too!" it said, adding the hashtags #promisemadepromisekept and #lessonlearnt.

In late 2018, the company ran into more problems when it was the subject of a data breach.

In October, Cathay Pacific acknowledged it had been hit by a massive data hack, with hackers snatching data of some 9.4 million customers.
