Goerges, who had suffered from lack of rhythm in that opening set, turned things around in the second and converted one of the four break-points she managed to create.

The defending champion has progressed to her second consecutive final in Auckland, after a 6-1 7-6 (6) victory over Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova on Saturday.

In fact, on the way she defeated 2 former world no.1 such as Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams.

Andreescu broke Williams eight times in the match as she slugged it out from the baseline and mixed in smart drop shots that the 38-year-old American struggled to reach.

Andreescu didn't relent with her attacking style, though, and it suddenly started to pay off as she raced away to take the second set 6-1.

From there the young Canadian reeled off 11 games in a row before a Williams rally briefly prolonged the deciding set.

She continued her red-hot form in a 6-3 6-3 win over third seed Hsieh Su-wei, becoming the first Canadian to advance to a WTA singles final since Eugenie Bouchard in 2016. Williams is ranked 39th in the world and has won 49 WTA tournaments in her career.

Goerges, ranked 14th in the world, raced out of the blocks, thumping winners and making few errors as she stormed through the first set.

"I've actually had this cough for three weeks now so I'm used to it", Andreescu said. "So for me it's not about giving up, it's about finding solutions and trying to find a way to get a victor".

Williams was too strong for previous tournament victor Lauren Davis, beating her 6-4 6-3.

The fifth seed was trailing 6-1, 4-2 when she stopped because of a left thigh injury.

There was little between the two players in the final set, where the quality of tennis was high considering the hard conditions.

"Canada has gone from being a minor nation in tennis", says Roth, "Sure, we've always had a few players who were good, to now being a legitimate force in the tennis world".

"This match was really important because I think that I can handle power players pretty well".

Alison Riske is to face Vera Zvonareva in the other semi-final.
