Wilder retains WBC heavyweight belt after battling to draw against Fury

  • Tyson Fury encourages the press room to sing along with him after his draw against Deontay Wilder

Fury felt that he deserved to take the WBC title from Wilder following his performance, although he was exceptionally gracious following the result.

One judge scored the fight 115-111 to Wilder, another 114-112 to Fury and the third had it 113-113.

"?One hundred? percent we'll do the rematch", said Fury, fighting in the first heavyweight title pay-per-view bout in America since 2002.

"I think with the two knockdowns I definitely won the fight", Wilder said. Opinions were divided on the judges' decision, however, with some claiming that Fury was robbed of one of the greatest comebacks in history despite two knockdowns.

The fight went the way that the Englishman wanted and Wilder was more defensive than he has ever been, only really daring to come out of his shell in the final 10 seconds of each round.

Wilder (40-0-1) floored Fury (27-0-1) in the ninth and 12th rounds, yet Fury clearly outboxed Wilder for large portions of the remainder of their entertaining showdown at Staples Center.

Talk of a rematch with Wilder has already begun with both parties seemingly keen to get a date in the diary, although Fury's promoter Frank Warren hopes to host the fight in the United Kingdom.

"I'm not going to sit here and complain, and scream robbery or whatever", Fury said. He thought, in the last round of what had been a thrilling heavyweight clash - which he had been second best in for much of - that that moment had come and saved him.

"I'll be more patient in throwing punches", said the 33-year old Wilder, who at times was made to look downright amateurish by Fury.

"It happened to me and I knew it was going to happen to him".

While Fury will perhaps be aggrieved not to have taken the fight on the judges scorecards as even the most partisan American fan could see that the British challenger had outpointed his rival, he showed admirable heart to survive the force of the Alabama man's blows. I saw his eyes roll into the back of his head. He vacated his titles and spent 2 ½ years out of the ring before getting sober.

While Wilder kept his belt, Fury remained the unofficial lineal champion of the heavyweight division by virtue of his victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015. Then in the 12th, a Wilder right hand and left hook combination sent the 6-foot-9 Fury down again, hitting his head on the canvas.

It figured to be a match-up of Wilder's power versus Fury's ability to use his foot movement to avoid and frustrate Wilder.

"No wonder AJ didn't want no part of that right hand!"

"As long as I'm focused for the full duration of the fight, I don't see him landing any punches at all", Fury said.
