  • Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in action during the men's singles match between Frances Tiafoe of USA and Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on day 3 of the Hopman Cup tennis tournament at RAC Arena in Perth Monday

Kerber won all four of her singles matches without dropping a set in Perth at the start of the year, as part of a 14-match winning streak that was only snapped in the Australian Open semi-final by Simona Halep.

And now they'll meet for the first time in their storied careers when they face off in a Hopman Cup exhibition mixed doubles match on New Year's Day in Australia.

Federer and Williams, both 37, have won a combined 43 Grand Slam titles. Another 4-2, 4-3 victory in the dead rubber mixed doubles enabled the Germans to beat the Spaniards 3-0 in their opening tie at the tournament.

The 20-year-old held his nerve, achieving a mini break from Tsitsipas' first two serves to claim the tiebreaker.

That opened the door for Williams, the bookmakers' favourite for the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne, to power back and ultimately win 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 in an hour and 44 minutes.

As Tennis.com notes, Williams said: "You know, I've been training in the off-season to be ready for Roger".

Although thrilled with his first-up performance, Federer doesn't want to get carried away just yet.

"It's very exciting for both of us", Federer said.

Serena's journey Down Under comes as she prepares to reclaim her title at the Australian Open next month, after missing out on the tournament past year due to her prior pregnancy.

Although Federer had to save three break points in the opening game of the first set, he proved to be more than the 23-year-old could handle as Norrie had to wait for five games before getting onto the scoreboard, reports Efe.

The match-up is set to draw worldwide interest, and the players themselves are just as excited.

It was a similar story in the second set, as Norrie was unable to follow up his fine win over world No 15 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Saturday.

World No.15 Tsitsipas broke Tiafoe in the sixth game of the first set, unlucky not to capitalise on an earlier break point in the same game when his foot touched the net after hitting a victor against the American.

Another early break by Tsitsipas put him ahead in the third and a sizzling backhand victor on match point secured victory for the Greek.

Greece prevailed in the deciding Fast4 mixed doubles 4-1 1-4 4-2.
