It's the most talked about TV event of the year, as the decorations come down, we all go back to work, and from January through to November barely a week goes by where we're not wondering what the retail giant will pull out of the bag come Christmas.

As the familiar dulcet sounds of "you can tell everybody, this is your song" play, you watch the reverse trajectory of Elton John's musical career, beginning in present day.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert is no exception, as it features one very famous face and the gift that changed his life - yes, we're talking Elton John and a piano.

It added that Sir Elton had requested that a portion of his fee be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust when he was first approached to be involved.

There are few things that mark the beginning of the festive season like the John Lewis Christmas ad.

John Lewis addressed speculation about the cost of this year's ad, describing reports that it had paid Sir Elton £5 million as "wildly inaccurate".

This year's ad is called The Boy And The Piano, and features singer-songwriting legend Elton John, performing his classic Your Song throughout his career.

"The ad is absolutely fantastic and I've truly loved every minute of being a part of it".

The John Lewis advert launched this morning but has been teased throughout the week, and you probably didn't have a clue. "That's the magical feeling we wanted to bring to life this year", explains Craig Inglis, customer director at John Lewis.

The advert aims to highlight how some gifts are more than just a gift.

Many users said the ad is too Elton John marketing heavy, especially considering he is about to embark on his "final" world tour 'Yellow Brick Road'.

He explained: "I think Elton has enjoyed the process of making this tremendously".
