Wallabies not in disarray, insists Michael Cheika

  • Adam Ashley Cooper and Kurtley Beale have been dropped by Australia coach Michael Cheika for the Autumn International against England for disciplinary reasons

Former Test hooker Brendan Cannon says if coach Michael Cheika keeps his job Rugby Australia need to immediately appoint an independent selector to help arrest the slide of the Wallabies.

The embarrassing episode comes amid increasing pressure on Cheika, whose role as Australian coach is hanging by a thread.

"They can't sit back and let this decline continue without someone deciding to take the bull by the horns, say this is unacceptable and we need to do something to turn it around", he said.

"It is a relatively minor inter-team rule we have", said Cheika, who was flanked by Wallaby captain Michael Hooper. I don't think you can just point to Kurtley Beale as being potentially out of form.

"The leadership group came to me earlier in the week and asked me to deal with it in a way I thought was appropriate and I thought this was the appropriate way".

"You can win your games against Italy, just, but that goes to show where [Australia] are in world rugby", he said.

Four years ago, Beale was found guilty of sending an offensive text to then Australia team business manager Di Patston, and fined US$38,500.

"But once it was pointed out to them that the rule was there for a reason, they recognised that they had erred, and they accepted the team and Michael's position".

"I'm disappointed as much as they would be, trust me, but in rugby sometimes the game goes against you, ' Cheika said".

"There's a lot of great people in our team and a lot of great things happening behind the scenes that right now aren't turning themselves into wins but we'll turn them into wins next year".

"Whatever that is - changing the coach, appointing a former Wallaby as a chairman of selectors on a panel, appointing new assistants - take a bit from each of the successful teams in the world and implement that".

"Guys who we think are going to be in the World Cup squad and other guys who are competition for other players at different levels". To not get there this time is disappointing for him and the team.

"It's extremely hard. There's no way around it", Hooper said.

It seems unlikely there will be any overhaul of the Wallabies environment but Castle said the review would be pivotal heading into a World Cup year.

Cannon, who played 42 Tests, said he knew how the current crop were feeling, comparing it to the 2005 spring tour.

"We've got to make this team better and stop making the small excuses, 'I didn't understand that that would be, I thought that would be okay, '".
