Fox News admitted Tuesday it was a mistake for its star news host Sean Hannity to speak at a campaign event with President Donald Trump, saying it was an "unfortunate distraction" which "has been addressed".
"We have an extraordinary team of journalists helming our coverage tonight and we are extremely proud of their work", the statement added.
Officials also called the issue a distraction and said it "has been addressed".
He said that he hadn't planned to appear on stage - something he and Fox previously insisted he wouldn't do - but said he was "honored" by Trump's request that he say a few words to the crowd.
But, approximately 12 hours after Hannity posted his tweet, he was campaigning on stage with Trump in one of the clearest demonstrations yet of the cozy relationship between the network and the Trump White House.
Hannity went onstage at the Trump rally after tweeting earlier in the day that he was just there to interview the president.
A network spokesperson pleaded against Hannity taking the stage with the president in a statement on Tuesday. "This was NOT planned". It came after Hannity's prime-time show aired from the rally site, during which he pleaded with viewers to vote Republican on Tuesday to support Trump, and his opening monologue echoed a campaign slogan seen on signs at the arena: "Promises made, promises kept". "I am covering final rally for the show". The opinionated host defended the move on Twitter as unplanned.
Hannity tweeted this morning, "To be clear, I was not referring to my journalist colleagues at FOX News in those remarks".
"They do awesome work day in and day out in a fair and balanced way", he said on Twitter. Here's my account of him being scheduled to do his show from a Tea Party event in Cincinnati in 2010, and Fox News cancelling his appearance after heavy criticism from mainstream media. Hannity described his role as that of an "advocacy journalist" during an interview in 2017.
Trump said that "we don't mean at all to insult - look at the size of the media back there".
In addition to his conversation with Pelosi, Trump called Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, as well as a number of candidates he backed during the race, the White House said. Pirro, a former NY state attorney general who has a weekend show on Fox, spoke after him. There is nothing real about what Fox News reports on any given day.
"People throughout the company think a new line was crossed", one senior Fox News employee told CNN Business, one of a half-dozen Fox employees who spoke anonymously to the rival network.
