Trump Abruptly Cancels G-20 Meeting with Putin

"I would be very surprised if Trump and Putin don't meet, at least informally", Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group, said on "The Daily Briefing" Thursday.

The White House said Trump and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the Ukraine-Russia incident by telephone and "the two leaders expressed deep concern about the incident in the Kerch Strait and the continued detainment of Ukraine's vessels and crew members". That's because Trump did not bring up Russian "meddling" in the 2016 election, which has become an article of faith in the USA despite no actual evidence of it ever being produced.

He will press Chinese President Xi Jinping to avert the stepped-up tariffs by throwing open China's markets to U.S. competition and protecting foreign companies' intellectual property.

The G-20 is a recent and somewhat odd institution-probably the first major worldwide institution to be created without a dominant US role as parent or midwife.

"We condemn this demonstration of barbarism and are multiplying our efforts to bring our boys home", Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said on Twitter after the court rulings. "I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!"

However, former U.S. diplomat and foreign policy adviser to Senate Republican leaders, Jim Jatras, said that Kerch strait was simply the pretext for Trump's decision.

Tensions in the region toward Russian Federation have been strained since 2014, when Moscow annexed Crimea - a move many in the global community don't formally recognize.

U.S. media reacted with outrage to the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki, Finland, in July, with more than one outlet and talking head calling his remarks at a press conference there "treasonous".

Over the last year, the two countries have levied a series of tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of imports from one another, with the latest round of United States duties set to go into force in the new year. However, as he was flying to the G20 earlier today Trump chose to cancel the meeting. "In economic terms we need to decide if we are going to follow the economic globalisation and free market or if we are going to choose unilateralism and protectionism". The two sides have been in negotiations for months, but Kudlow described them as being stalemated until just a few weeks ago.

He said American and Russian delegations would also convene for talks that may last an hour.

"In relation to Mr Khashoggi, we want to see a full and transparent investigation of what happened and those responsible being held to account", she said.

Kudlow added that if the USA doesn't get "satisfactory" responses to its trade positions more tariffs will be imposed.

At best, analysts say, there will be a temporary truce at the G20 to give both Trump and Xi something to crow about.

"If China will come to the table, or in this case the dinner table, with some new ideas and some new attitudes and some new cooperation, as the president said, there is a good possibility they could make a deal", economic adviser Larry Kudlow said this week.
