  • Central American migrants climb the border fence between Mexico and the United States near El Chaparral border crossing in Tijuana Mexico Nov. 25 2018

Mexico's incoming interior minister said there was "no agreement of any type between the future govt of Mexico and US".

"No "Releasing" into the USA ..." President Enrique Pena Nieto offered thousands of Central Americans asylum on October 26 if they agreed to remain in southern Mexico.

"There is no agreement of any sort between the incoming Mexican government and the U.S. government", future Interior Minister Olga Sanchez said in a statement on Saturday.

Asylum seekers will submit their application on the US-Mexico border, at an official entry point, and then turn back to wait in Mexico while the US authorities evaluate their claim.

Trump did turn to Twitter on Saturday evening to discuss the migrant matter, vowing that those at the U.S. -Mexico border wouldn't be permitted into America "until their claims are individually approved in court".

Calling it a "short-term solution", she adds that "the medium- and long-term solution is that people don't migrate".

The news comes after confusion on Saturday, when it was reported President Trump had reached a deal with Mexico over their housing the members of the caravan until such time as they can be processed and their cases adjudicated by the American courts. One variation, called "Safe Third", would have denied asylum claims on the grounds that asylum seekers had found haven in Mexico.

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about what the president was referring to.

But by early evening, the picture grew more complex, as the incoming Mexican government said there was "no agreement of any sort".

Sanchez said the government did not intend for Mexico to become a "safe third country".

"They're going to have to open the borders (for the migrants) to put in the request", Vences said.

In a Twitter message on Saturday, President Trump reiterated threats to close the southern border - threats that have alarmed many in Mexico, since cross-border trade is a mainstay of the Mexican economy.

Asylum seekers will be given an initial screening to determine whether they face imminent danger by staying in Mexico, where violence is widespread.

After months on the road, the men, women and children in the camp are now living on donated food, sleeping on blankets and sharing makeshift toilet facilities.

It added that under the new rules, an applicant whose asylum claim is denied would not be allowed to return to Mexico but would remain in USA custody pending immediate deportation to his or her home country. USA officials at the San Ysidro crossing generally accept no more than 100 asylum applications a day.

Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum on Friday declared a humanitarian crisis in his border city of 1.6 million, which he says is struggling to accommodate the influx.

Associated Press writer Christopher Sherman contributed to this story from Tijuana.

Mr Trump's administration are understood to have been exploring other options for deals that could limit the number of people from the so-called "caravan" of migrants crossing its border.
