Strong winds and snow are expected to create blizzard conditions across much of Nebraska and parts of Kansas on Sunday. Snowfall is expected to end midday Sunday.

The National Weather Service Office in Topeka has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the northern half of Kansas including Riley, Pottawatomie and Geary counties from late Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service was warning those conditions would make travel hard in places.

In total, the storm could dump a foot or more of snow in some places. Minor accidents have been reported along Interstate 80 in Iowa, Johnson and Cedar Counties where snow began to pile up late Sunday morning.

Between 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible in the Kansas City area. Stephenson, Carroll, Jo Daviess, and Whiteside counties are also under a Winter Storm Warning from 3 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. midnight Monday.

More than 18,000 customers had lost electric power by early Sunday afternoon as a threatened blizzard packing winds near 50 miles per hour began knocking down power lines.

The weather service said outdoor items should be secured, including trash cans and Christmas and holiday decorations. The heavy bands of snow will continue through early afternoon, tapering off in southwest Iowa mid-afternoon and continuing in southeast Iowa through the early evening.

"Two-day record snowfall in November ranges from 8.9 inches in 1975 to 11.2 inches in 2015", he said. Slick spots, snow-covered roads, and low visibility level are all possible here.

Rain will change to snow Saturday, with 2-4 inches of snow expected locally.

Kluber said the storm was expected to hit the Chicago region sometime Sunday evening.
