Hyde-Smith was appointed to temporarily succeed him. Under all circumstances, in an incredibly bitter race, Espy remained collected and did not give in to the controversy swirling around Hyde-Smith.

He says this wasn't the result he and his supporters were hoping for but adds: "I'm very proud of this historic campaign".

The win makes Hyde-Smith, 59, the first woman elected to Congress from Mississippi.

The runoff contest drew comparisons to the Alabama Senate special election previous year, when Democrat Doug Jones won a narrow victory against Roy Moore, after the Republican faced multiple accusations from women that he had molested them when they were teenagers.

Espy's campaign hammered Hyde-Smith with television ads that cast her as an embarrassment to a state that has attempted to overcome its history of slavery and racism.

The runoff was rocked by a video showing her praise a supporter by saying she'd attend a "public hanging" if he invited her.

In 2014, Hyde-Smith posted a picture on Facebook of herself wearing a replica of a Confederate army hat.

'Mississippians know me and they know my heart, ' she said.

Hyde-Smith vowed Tuesday night to "represent every Mississippian" and to "work very hard, do my very best to make MS proud of your U.S. Senator". The state last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1982. She later sent her daughter to a similar school.

President Donald Trump is congratulating Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith on her election win.

Along with the joke in which the Republican said she'd attend a "public hanging" at the behest of a friend she admired, other facts about Hyde-Smith - including that she and her child both attended all-white schools sometimes referred to as "seg academies" - have made race a deciding factor in her runoff election against her black Democratic opponent. Republicans defeated Democratic incumbents in Florida, Missouri, Indiana and North Dakota, but lost GOP-held seats in Arizona and Nevada.

The runoff election in MS between the two highest vote-getters in the November 6 midterm elections gained a high-degree of national attention because of the many controversial statements and actions made by Hyde-Smith in the weeks leading up to the election.

She initially refused to apologize for the hanging remark, but said in a debate last week that she was sorry 'for anyone that was offended'.

Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate earlier this year after GOP Sen.

As it stands now, major American corporations and brands including Walmart, Major League Baseball, Google and AT&T have all demanded that Hyde-Smith return their donations to her campaign. He tried to recreate the coalition that propelled Democrat Doug Jones to a Senate win in neighbouring Alabama past year by energizing black voters, particularly women, and winning support from white swing voters. Thad Cochran who announced his retirement back in March. "We are all very proud of you!"
