  • Afghan security forces arrive at the site of an attack by gunmen in Kabul on Aug. 16. A U.S. service member was killed and another wounded in the city on Nov. 3 by an Afghan security force member

Taylor resigned from the mayor's office before he went overseas, the Standard-Examiner of Ogden reported. Meanwhile, North Ogden officials plan to come up with a way to remember Taylor, who had been elected to his second term as mayor in 2017 following a term on the North Ogden City Council. Swanson described Taylor as a "one of a kind" person.

But Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer J. Cox wrote on his Facebook page that Taylor has been killed.

"Brent was a hero, a patriot, a wonderful father, and a dear friend", Sen.

Against this grim backdrop, Gen Austin Scott Miller, the newly-minted head of U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation operations in Afghanistan, admitted last week that the war against the Taliban "is not going to be won militarily", but would require a "political solution". My prayers and love are with Jennie and his seven young children.

"He always wanted to give back and make the world a better place", Cox said in a telephone interview Saturday night.

The Facebook posts, which showed photos of Taylor while deployed, were an example of the way in which he kept people connected, residents said.

Taylor was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Utah in global relations after receiving a Bachelor of Arts at Brigham Young in political science and a Master of Public Administration from the Unifersity of Utah.

"The sacrifices of you and so many of your comrades", Taylor said, "have made it possible for America to be a source of light, scientific growth, and human progress throughout its entire history".

"He approached everything and everyone with the idea that he would leave them better than he found them", said Jonathon Call, a North Ogden resident now deployed to Kuwait with the Utah National Guard. We must rally around his family.

"There are three great loyalties that have guided my life and everything in it: God, family and country", Taylor said then.

"Believe me, they're hurt by this as well", said Burton.

Taylor had temporarily stepped down as North Ogden's mayor during his deployment, which began in January of this year. "Service is really what leadership is all about".

The attack was the latest in a series of "green-on-blue" incidents in which members of the Afghan forces have killed us or coalition advisers this year, and it followed the death of a Czech soldier in the western province of Herat last month.

The US forces are part of the Nato-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, which has more than 16,000 personnel. The gunman was reportedly a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces - whom Taylor was deployed to train and advise.
