  • Yearbook cheerleader pic allegedly shows GOP Sen. Hyde-Smith at 70s high school segregation academy

Hyde-Smith is a proponent of a stronger border and has supported Trump's wall.

"So, that's a Mississippi I want to be a part of, one of diversity, one of inclusion, one of different experiences ..."

More than 43,000 absentee ballots have been requested for the runoff, and that number could increase as circuit clerks continue compiling information, the MS secretary of state's office said Saturday. Trump has previously thanked Hyde-Smith for voting for "our Agenda in the Senate 100% of the time".

On Friday, the Jackson Free Press reported that Hyde-Smith attended a private high school that was founded in 1970 so that white parents could avoid attempts to integrate schools by sending their children to schools without black students. In the heavily Republican state, Hyde-Smith had always been seen as the prohibitive favorite in the race.

At a campaign event on November 2, Hyde-Smith was caught on camera alongside one of her supporters saying that if he ever invited her to attend a public hanging, she'd sit in the front row. There's typically a decrease in ballots cast between the first election and a runoff. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy, a former USA secretary of agriculture seeking to become Mississippi's first black senator since Reconstruction. Hyde-Smith is the first woman to represent MS in Congress.

But race has become a dominant issue as Hyde-Smith faces Espy, a former congressman and USA agriculture secretary.

Hyde-Smith's campaign called the school issue a personal attack on her family meant to draw attention away from real issues. Kamala Harris traveled to MS to support Espy, who is attempting to duplicate the longshot election of a Democratic senator in neighboring Alabama a year ago. She said there are as many as 95,000 Black women in the state who historically vote in presidential elections but not at other times. Thad Cochran, who retired in April. She also posed in a photo wearing a Confederate hat and holding a rifle that made the rounds on Facebook, and it was just uncovered that she sponsored a resolution praising Confederate soldiers' "defending their homeland." The victor of Tuesday's runoff gets the final two years of a term he started.

Hyde-Smith has established herself as an inveterate supporter of the president.

Yearbook photos from Lawrence Academy, which is now closed, show Hyde was a cheerleader for a team that had a rebel mascot who carried a Confederate battle flag.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith speaks in Southaven, Miss., on October 2, 2018. The caption on the post read, "Mississippi history at its best!" It's the last U.S. Senate race to be decided in 2018 and will determine whether Republicans add to their slim majority.

While Hyde-Smith apologized during a debate Tuesday night, opponents say she's at least unconsciously echoing the state's history of White supremacy, and civil rights groups have seized the moment to push Black voters to the polls.

Democrat Mike Espy answers a question during a televised Mississippi U.S. Senate debate with his opponent appointed U.S. Sen.
