Manafort violated plea deal, lied to investigators, prosecutors say

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office "on a variety of subject matters" since his plea deal earlier this year, thereby violating the agreement, Mueller said in a court filing submitted Monday night, while adding that Manafort claims he's been truthful. Prosecutors say in a new court filing that after Manafort agreed to truthfully co-operate with the investigation, he “committed federal crimes†by lying about “a variety of subject matters. His attorneys say in the same filing that he believes he "provided truthful information".
The conventional wisdom among legal experts seems to be that Manafort did not care about telling the truth because he's going all in on President Donald Trump pardoning him.
But Manafort, too, called for the judge, Amy Berman Jackson, to set a sentencing date.
The intervention means Mr Manafort could potentially face bank fraud charges, which were dismissed as part of the plea bargain.
Manafort states as part of the filing that he does not agree with prosecutor's description.
Manafort, who worked for the Trump campaign for almost six months in the middle of 2016, agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another count of obstruction of justice in a deal to avert a second trial on money laundering and illegal lobbying charges.
Manafort, though he has not made public statements since then, was thought to be the star cooperator in the special counsel's ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.
The timing of the Manafort status update is worth noting in its own right - seriously, it feels like it was only just yesterday that President Trump supplied written answers to Mueller's questions "regarding the Russia-related topics of the inquiry".
Russian Federation denies USA allegations it hacked Democratic Party emails and ran a disinformation campaign, largely on social media. Except for one aspect of their bank fraud case, in which Manafort appeared to dangle access to the Trump campaign in exchange for a bank loan, the cases did not publicly describe Manafort's work as campaign chairman.
Manafort has been held in a Virginia jail since June, after he and Kilimnik were accused of attempting to tamper with possible witnesses before his trial. With a circumstance like this, only one side of the deal gets torn up - and that's the prosecutors' promises of mercy, they said in the filing Monday.
Manafort was convicted on 8 counts in the Eastern District of Virginia and sentencing in that case is scheduled for early February.
