Insulin Paucity Could Impact 40 Million People With Type 2 Diabetes

  • 98 million Indians will suffer from diabetes by 2030, says Study

The authors note several limitations, including that the projections of type 2 diabetes prevalence do not account for dietary and physical activity environments changing over time, which means that the disease could have a much larger or smaller impact in the future. "Regardless of these uncertainties, insulin is likely to maintain its place as a crucial therapy for type 2 diabetes, and as such a sufficient global supply needs to be estimated and ensured.Ongoing updates to models such as these that incorporate new data and trends as they accrue, may be the most reliable way of assuring their reliability and relevance to evidence-based care". The untreated person affected by diabetes were affected by the deterioration of heart, kidney, eyes, nerves, blood vessels, stroke, and the major complication is that these high sugar level patients can not undergo surgery because the healing of a surgical wound is slow and complicated. That trend is only expected to continue, with adults with type 2 diabetes expected to rise from 406 million this year to 511 million in 2030.

The study predicts that African, Asian, and Oceania regions will not get the proper amount of insulin in 2030 if the access remains at current levels.

In the next 12 years, half of those with type 2 diabetes won't be able to receive potentially life-saving insulin unless access to the drug improves, new research shows.

"These estimates suggest that current levels of insulin access are highly inadequate compared to the projected need, particularly in Africa and Asia, and more efforts should be devoted to overcoming this looming health challenge". Also, the expensive treatment is dominated by three manufacturers. Not all diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, however, will need insulin; only 79 million people by 2030 would need to take insulin.

A study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, says access to insulin will fall well short of demand.

Insulin is very much essential for patients to combat type 2 diabetes and it will help the diabetic victims to reduce complications associated with this disease like kidney failure, blindness and stroke.

In 2016 an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that the drug's price nearly tripled between 2002 and 2013. "Unless governments begin initiatives to make insulin available and affordable, then its use is always going to be far from optimal".
