  • Doomed Indonesia Jet Had Damaged Airspeed Indicator On Last 4 Flights

Indonesian authorities extended on Wednesday a search for victims of the plane crash last week, when all 189 on board a Lion Air flight were killed, and for the aircraft's second black box, the cockpit voice recorder.

The angle-of-attack sensor is meant to measure the angle between air flow and a reference line on the frame or wings so that they maintain lift.

It was not immediately clear if the airspeed issue had any connection with the angle-of-attack matter.

American aviation regulators followed by issuing an emergency order Wednesday requiring that airlines follow Boeing's instructions and add information to pilot manuals showing how to diagnose the problem and respond.

The Lion Air crash was the first involving the type of plane, which airlines introduced into service a year ago.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked Jet Airways and SpiceJet to take corrective measures to address any possible issues with their Boeing 737 Max aircraft that could lead to significant altitude loss.

Boeing is involved in the ongoing investigation with the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee and other government authorities into the Lion Air crash and "continues to cooperate fully and provide technical assistance". The single-aisle family is Boeing's biggest source of profit.

After an engine on a Southwest Airlines plane fractured earlier this year over Pennsylvania, killing a passenger, CFM International issued multiple bulletins to operators of its CFM56-7B power plants.

The replaced AOA sensor has been sent to Jakarta for investigation by the KNKT and later it will be sent to its manufacturer in the United States for a further probe, said Tjahjano.

"We will tighten up our monitoring and inspections and wait for final report on the investigation", Garuda Indonesia's president director, said Gusti Ngurah Askhara Danadiputra.

"Both the documents address erroneous high "angle of attack" (AOA) sensor input and corrective action for the same as it has potential for repeated nose-down trim commands of horizontal stabiliser", a senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official told PTI.

Pilots can counteract this for up to 10 seconds at a time by pushing a switch on the airplane's controls.

Neither carrier said they had received any reports from pilots of issues with the sensor, which calculates the "angle of attack", a measurement of the angle of the plane's wing and airflow needed to maintain lift. In the early days of the jet age, the pitch trim system was linked to several accidents. That case didn't involve the angle-of-attack system. All 62 people aboard died.
