Blizzard Didn't Expect Such a Negative Reaction To 'Diablo Immortal'

  • Blizzard Activision announces Diablo Immortal for iOS

Apparently, Diablo 4 is in development, but the team wasn't ready to commit to an announcement as the game has changed "drastically" over the past four years and may continue to evolve.

However, Blizzard has since issue a statement confirming it did not hold back on any planned announcements. In response to the worries that Immortal was simply a reskin of other NetEase games, Adham stated that this is a game "purpose-built from the ground up", and all the art and assets were created exclusively for Diablo Immortal.

He followed up that information with: "We still have multiple Diablo teams working on multiple unannounced Diablo projects".

The new "Diablo Immortal" mobile offering fell short of some fan expectations for the popular desktop games. Comparatively, video-game rival Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.'s recent smash hit Red Dead Redemption 2 notched more 16 million views for its trailer since its release, while recording less than 10,000 dislikes.

Previous games have had players descend, level by level, into an underworld crammed with all manner of monsters, treasures and equipment, ending with a powerful evil demon that must be slain. "So the feel, the UI and everything around this game is built with the philosophy to make the best Diablo experience we can on a mobile platform". At time of righting the video has 14 000 likes versus 382 000 dislikes.

Blizzard went out and told Kotaku the truth.

Diablo fans could've had a completely different reaction had the original plan gone through at BlizzCon.

And now there's Diablo Immortal, which is still in development for smartphones. We hoped that would allay concerns, but we knew despite that our most engaged, most passionate fans and players here at this show would only be satisfied with one thing. Diablo 4 is probably still in the works, though the developer/publisher isn't letting on what it'll consist of just yet.

So this past weekend wasn't the greatest one for Blizzard Entertainment.

The opening ceremony for this year's BlizzCon concluded with an announcement for Diablo Immortal, a new mobile-only Diablo set between the second and third games. Many devs stop playing games as they start making them professionally.

I can say to them, we have not forgotten you. On Monday, when the New York Stock Exchange opened for the first time this week, shares of Activision Blizzard dropped significantly.
