  • Policemen block members of the public from walking towards the Bourke Street mall in central Melbourne Australia

One person has been stabbed to death, two have been injured, and another man has been shot by police in terrifying scenes on Melbourne's Bourke Street on Friday. One of the officers raises his weapon, a shot is heard and the man falls to the ground clutching his chest.

More than 100 police have swarmed on the area.

Police have since confirmed the man was shot in the chest and is in a critical condition.

No other suspects are being sought.

Superintendent Clayton said there is no known link to terrorism at this stage and they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

Video taken by witnesses shows a vehicle on fire in the area and bystanders using a shopping trolley and chair to confront the attacker.

"There was a massive flame and bang, just smoke and lots of people", witness Shelley Reid told Nine News.

The incident comes as a man is on trial for a 2017 attack on the same street which left six people dead.

The Friday incident took place blocks away from Flinders Street Railway Station, where a driver plowed into pedestrians previous year, injuring 18.

"This is Victoria Police, please evacuate the area".

A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition. Police initially responded to a report of a vehicle on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4.20pm.

Earlier, Ambulance Victoria said they had assessed three people at the scene.

"Three victims have been located, two appear to have been stabbed to the upper body, the third has died at the scene", Victoria Police said in a statement. Police response was swift and overwhelming.

The incident comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January previous year.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade said the fire was contained within 10 minutes.

"I really wanted to help but I was in shock, I didn't know what to do".

One of the cops then shoots him.

The Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, urged people to avoid the area. "I heard at least one gunshot initially".
